I’ve had troubles with Poedit sometime in the past, out of ESD context,
but that was because I’ve messed up my machine and Poedit installation.
After switching distro and a newer version of it some years ago, Poedit
works as it is expected to, even with huge files (over fifty
thousands strings). Only occasionally it crashes out of the blue.
So, no, I wouldn’t expect it to mess with quotes in a file.
If you can, try booting from a live distro and add poedit to it and see
what happens with the issues you’re having.
